Balloon Car Challenge
Balloon Car Challenge
Kira Kira Flyers
This team’s balloon is powered by air coming out of a balloon
attached to the front of the car.
The materials that they use to make this balloon car are four
plastic bottle caps, two toothpicks, two balloons, three rubber bands, a thick
straw, and two clothespins.
I explain how to make this balloon car.
First, we make holes in the plastic bottle caps large enough hold a toothpick.
Second, we glue the two plastic bottle caps and a two toothpick.
Therefore, we make another one of the same.
Third, we attach a balloon to a straw using a rubber band and make
another one of the same.
Finally, we put them on top of the two things made of toothpicks and
plastic bottle cap and glue them together.
After listening to this presentation, I think there are two problems
in this balloon car design.
First, it is place balloons in front of the car. The reason I think
it is problem is that if there is a in front of the car, it would get in the
way when it moves.
Second, this design is not designed to use two balloons. When Mr. Jeffry
asked them about it, the team’s members were in a hurry to think about it.
Therefore, I think the outcome will be different from what they had envisioned.
I think that this team lacked an explanation of difficult points
when they make this balloon car.
Therefore, they should have said difficult points when they make
this balloon car.
In addition, they should consider
this design from multi perspective.
Finally, I think that would make this team’s presentation much
better.
a)
Uniqueness of design (6)
I think this team’s design is simple.
b) Effectiveness of presentation (7)
I think that this team lacked an explanation of difficult points when they make this balloon car.

This team’s balloon car is powered by air coming out of two balloons
attached to the front of the car.
The materials they use in this balloon
car are cardboard, Y-shaped straws, toothpicks, tape, rubber bands and plastic
bottle caps.
They use the Y-shaped straw to let the air out of the two balloons.
I explain how to make this balloon car.
First, they make a hole in the center of a plastic bottle cap and stick
a toothpick through the hole so that the groove of the toothpick fits through
the hole.
Second, they make
a hole in the cardboard large enough to fit a straw and attach a plastic bottle
cap to the other end of the toothpick in the same way.
Third, they fix
a straw to the end of the balloon and secure it to the cardboard and use a
straw with two separate tips because we make the air in the two balloons
continue to flow for as long as possible.
Finally, they tied around the plastic bottle caps to use rubber
bands to prevent tires from spinning out of control.
There are three difficult points in this challenge.
The first point is to make a car with lightweight materials.
It’s because a car that weights less can move longer than a car that
weights more.
The second point is to reduce air resistance.
The third point is
to make the tires balanced and symmetrical to create a sturdy car.
Their presentation was easy for me to understand.
However, I think that some team members do not fully understand the
content.
In conclusion, we think that if all members of the team fully
understand this content, their presentation will be better.

This team’s balloon car differs from the others in that it uses
paper cups for tires.
The materials they use in this balloon car are paper cups, balloons,
a cardboard, two bearings, straws, bamboo skewers and tape.
I explain how to make this balloon car.
First, they cut two stacked cardboard boxes.
Second, they cut four stacked cardboard boxes into 2 cm by 2 cm
pieces.
Third, we drill a hole in the middle of them.
Forth, they make four straws cut about 2-3 cm pieces.
Fifth, they prepare cardboard cut into 10 cm by 13 cm, four straws
cut into 3 cm pieces, bearings, and glue and fix them because reducing friction
resistance and without contact between the tires and the car body.
Sixth, they cut in the two cowl parts each for right and left.
Seventh, they cut a paper cup into three parts and make four pars.
Eighth, they make a hole in the middle of the part to be a tire.
Nineth, they align the hole in the cardboard cut into 2 cm by 2 cm
pieces with hole in the bottom of a paper cup and tape them together.
Tenth, they combine the parts with bamboo skewers.
Eleventh, they attach two balloons to a straw with tape.
Twelfth, they attach it to the car body with tape.
There is a difficult point in this challenge.
It is that the balloon hit the tire and the car slow down.
They attach a cover on top of the tire to solve this problem.
Their presentation was easy for me to understand.
Also, I think this team’s car design is created with ideas from a
variety of perspectives.

c) Probability of success (8)
Because this team has tried it on a prototype.

This team’s balloon is powered by air coming out of a balloon
attached to the center of the car.
The materials
that they use to make this balloon car are balloons, cardboard, toothpicks, straws,
and plastic bottle caps.
I explain how to make this balloon car.
First, they make a hole in the center of a plastic bottle cap and make
another three of the same.
Third, they
create two spaces in the gaps between the cardboard for the straw to pass through.
Second, they stick
two toothpicks through them on one side.
Forth, they pass
them through the cardboard that thread the straw.
Fifth, they stick
them through them on the other side.
Sixth, they attach two balloons to a straw with tape.
Finally, they
attach them on the main car body.
There are two difficult points in this challenge.
First, they make
the balloon car with the simplest materials possible.
They make it
using only what they have at home.
Second, they use
two balloons to make the car move straight because it becomes to move the car
in a straight line when two balloons are used.
Their presentation was concise.
However, there
were parts of the presentation that were a little difficult to hear.
Therefore, I think
it would be a better presentation if they speak more clearly.
